We'll see what happens, right now putting an NV back in again seems to be the most cost effective way to make the truck driveable again. I figure at least main shaft, snap rings etc, plus the thrust bearing for the head gear (the SBC input shaft and unsprung clutch seem to eat those bearings alive, plus the added stress on both shafts. This uses a 32 spline output shaft and an adapter housing thats approximately 7' long. If I can only get 30k out of a $3000 NV4500, I can't imagine the imported parts lasting even a fraction of that. but with the Dodge NV4500 tailhousing and Dodge NP203. Back in the day when NV4500 came out, all the offroaders wanted it badly.
He also said he loved it, and he got the later model NV4500 so that the wide ratio between 2 and 3 was taken care of. Obviously due to the shaft layout, 3rd gear puts the most stress on the shafts, but without any real NV parts available any more, I don't trust putting import gears in this thing. The SM465 that I bought, was from a guy who had an 87 Short Wide K10 4x4. The engine/tranny combo came out of a cargo van so Im pretty sure. We have also seen combined truck and trailer weights exceeding 40,000 lbs. We have seen these trucks with engines putting out over 500 horsepower and 1,000 ft-lbs. at 190k miles, this is the second 3rd driven failure I've had in NV4500s. He found a number on the main case and my google search resulted in a 1992-1995 GM NV4500. 1,995.00 2,895. Owners of diesel powered NV4500 equipped trucks often greatly exceed the recommended horsepower and load ratings for their vehicle. I actually have a 48RE sitting on my garage floor that will eventually wind up in this truck.
